Giulius Caesar is one of those play that seems linear and simple, but actually is misterious and complex. This tragedy seems composed by two different plays, with two different main characters: first three acts dedicated to Julius Caesar, the last two to Brutus.
The real protagonist is not a person, but a concept: the relation between power and freedom.
In this perspective, there is no better place than Imperial Forum to represent this concept.
In particular Caesar Forum and Augustus Forum conceived with an architectural structure that wanted to be a visual political manifestos.
Director concept is sites are not just scenography, but part of the dialog among characters. Actually, it is not the scene that changes, but the audience that chooses its own point of view, moving around and following the play.
Caesar's house is Venus Temple in his Forum as he used to proclaim himself as goddess descendant. Brutus, won by Octavian's army, dies on Mars Temple, built by Augustus in honor of revenged Caesar.
These two samples show how envolving can be this unique experience. The possibility to live the shakespearian tragedy in its original places, seen by a new vision.
The play is represented in this structure: in Forum Caesar the audience can sit or move around, for the first three acts. During the break people walks through the Chiavicone to move to Augustus Forum to see the fourth and fifth act.
Here theatre becomes a unique emotion are the rules are reversed: the scene stands, the audience moves. The spectator chooses its own perspective and gives his own meaning to the drama.
"Passaggi Segreti" offers the possibility to see those ancient ruins not just as mysterious human artifacts but moreover as living places full of growing significance.
